YOU are the Most Important Person

In your child's decisions about sex, parents, guardians, and mentors are most often cited as the most influential person. You are the best person to help your teen son or daughter with the difficult issues of sex. Talk about character, values, and making sound decisions, these discussions are an important part of the "sex talk."

Whatever you do, be clear about your own sexual values and attitudes and talk to your kids early and often about healthy relationships and sex.

Why is it important to talk with your teen about abstinence, sex, and relationships?

The decisions that teens make now can affect their health and their character for the rest of their lives. It is important for parents, guardians, and mentors to help youth confront the dangers and challenges they face daily. Some of those dangers are very different from when you were a teenager.

Even though it may be difficult to talk to your teen about sex and sexual issues, chances are he or she probably wants you to, 37% of teens surveyed said their parents have the most influence on their sexual decisions, compared to media, friends, health teachers, and religious leaders.
